Six gross movies all about scary bugs

Do you have a phobia about bugs, insects, and other creepy crawlies (obviously, not spiders, they’re in a category all their own)? Then you’ll definitely want to avoid these six movies!

Ticks (1993)

From our review: “The other factor that’s made Ticks a cult legend is that it put a whole lot of work into the practical effects of its titular creatures. Remember, this was before CGI cheapened everything on screen, so everything here is made up of props and puppets — and they look amazingly good, especially when they skitter across the sets.”

The Nest (1987)

From our review: “I love that the roaches have their own weird little sound effect that I guess is meant to be chilling but comes across like a carbon monoxide alarm.”

Them! (1954)

From our review: “Them! is wonderful for family and party viewing. There certainly is a lot of fun attached to this movie and there is room to cheer when the ants are defeated.”

Meet the Applegates (1990)

From our review: “It’s just hard to reconcile the cheery Americana with incognito bugs eating trash, being sexually assaulted, and dabbling in the seedy underbelly of the suburbs. It’s like this film took a starter class from David Lynch and figured, eh, that’s enough, it’d figure out the rest on the way.”

Mimic (1997)

From our review: “I have long held a torch this early Guillermo del Toro project. It takes a dumb premise and carries it all the way to the end credits without a restraining defensive tackle from the studio bringing it down.”

Phase IV (1974)

From our review: “While it’s easy to assume that this is just another well-intentioned but goofy environmental message movie, Phase IV garnered a well-deserved reputation for being a genuinely unsettling story about a hive mind developing right under our feet.”
