Six weird movie spin-offs that went their own direction

Sometimes franchises get half-pregnant and produce a weird offshoot that attempted to go a different direction. Here are six notable entries:

Supergirl (1984)

From our review: “Supergirl came out right as the Superman franchise was tanking — between Superman III and Superman IV — and the same cheese that the producers of the series thought was befitting the Man of Steel got transferred to the Woman of Tupperware.”

Ewoks: The Battle for Endor (1984)

From our review: “It’s enjoyable, even, in a tacky film done right sort of way. I found myself gurgling with glee as plentiful action and humor lit up the screen, and came to the conclusion that — any day of the week — I would gladly watch Battle for Endor over any of the Star Wars prequels.”

Red Sonja (1985)

From our review: “So here’s another rating of a Schwarzenegger movie from back when he was still really into controlled substances instead of introducing legislation. Sure, it’s supposedly about Brigitte Nielsen’s aggressive redhead barbarian, but Arnie steals enough scenes that we’re pretty sure it’s his movie.”

American Pie Presents Band Camp (2005)

From our review: “For some reason, Hollywood execs got it into their dense, prehensile skulls that Steve Stifler was the one and only reason anyone saw the American Pie flicks. And they couldn’t be more wrong.”

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)

From our review: “Wolvie was wayyy funnier in the first three X-Men movies.  Also, dude, you did that middle-finger-claw thing already.”

The LEGO Batman Movie (2017)

From our review: “I don’t know how the creators managed to tie together so many of the on-screen appearances of the Caped Crusader and decades of references, villains, and tropes, but they did. And it is glorious.”
