The 1990s saw an explosion of movie sequels in far more than the horror genre — and some were absolute stinkers and horrible disappointments. Today let’s take a look at a half-dozen of the worst cult movie sequels to come out in that time period:
Highlander 2: The Quickening (1991)
From our review: “Highlander 2 is almost legendary for its badness — it’s like reading a Goofus and Gallant comic but only seeing the Goofus parts. I really feel there are no words I can string together that will impress upon you deeply enough the enormity of this misfire. It’s miserable on every level.”
Police Academy: Mission to Moscow (1994)
From our review: “Really, about the only people who have actually seen Mission to Moscow were the initial wave of suckers who picked it off the new release rack in 1994, and overly-curious movie fans and critics who wanted a little bit of themselves to die.”

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III (1993)
From our review: “The Turtle costumes are of shoddy quality, the jokes and action are clearly aimed at a demographic I like to call ‘the fourth grade,’ and there’s simply no Foot to kick around anymore.”
The NeverEnding Story III (1994)
From our review: “The first film was barely holding on to the effort of getting the audience to take it seriously, the second movie let go into a free fall of despair, and The NeverEnding Story III landed at the bottom of a pit so black and so devoid of hope that the only way to describe it is ‘1994.’”

Robocop 3 (1993)
From our review: “Before it even released in ’93, red flags abounded like happy hour at a NASCAR speedway. Peter Weller turned down the option to return for it, Frank Miller’s script was watered down past recognition, and the rating for the series dipped from R to PG-13 for the first time.”
Batman & Robin (1997)
From our review: “Since its release, Batman & Robin has joined other flicks like Battlefield Earth to become the modern big-budget blowouts that are penned in the history books as not just being bad, but being so spectacularly bad that future generations will develop time travel technology just to send nuclear bombs back and rid the world of all of us, one and for all.”
