Six ’80s movies that were obsessed with the ’50s

Just as we might be nostalgic for the ’80s and ’90s today, moviegoers back in the 1980s occasionally pined for long-ago times as well. Here are six ’80s flicks that were all about the 1950s:

Back to the Future (1985)

From our review: “What’s so great about it is that it’s just so gosh darn clever. All the references to the future back in 1955 are like private little inside jokes between us and Marty McFly.”

Mischief (1985)

From our review: “I guess there’s always that nostalgia factor for filmmakers who want to share something from their youth. By the look of Mischief, these filmmakers were equally stupid for girls and cars.”

Stand By Me (1986)

From our review: “Stand By Me manages to catch the essential tone of being a kid in all those strange and wonderful ways. Sure, it’s set in ’50s Maine, but some things about being a kid don’t change no matter what era you grow up in.”

Dead Poets Society (1989)

From our review: “Even in a movie that trumpets the expression of poetry, it arrives at a point where an image supplants any attempt at putting the message into words, and it still leaves me with shivers.”

Christine (1983)

From our review: “But Christine, the name given to the Fury by her previous owner, is not a normal car. She is in fact a 3,600-pound demon spawn made of chrome and steel, and she’s about to take Arnie on a ride to Hell.”

Strange Invaders (1983)

From our review: “What if aliens invaded a small midwestern town, replaced every human with identical lookalikes, and then simply… lived there for 30 years? No additional conquest, no monkey business, just a small, unassuming town seemingly stuck in the late ’50s that screams ‘go away and leave us alone!'”

  1. Does “Peggy Sue Got Married” fall into this category? The flashbacks are for 1960, though some might debate whether that’s the end of the 1950’s or the beginning of the 1960’s.
