Outer space isn’t always exciting adventures with Vulcans and Wookiees — sometimes there’s some scary, bad crap in the void of space, and when you’re stuck on a ship, that’s a problem. Here are six movies that prove this to be the case:
Event Horizon (1997)
From our review: “From this point on, the film is a paranoia scare-fest in outer space which just doesn’t stop. Disturbing imagery? Check. Creepy lighting, creepy soundtrack, sense of impending doom? Right here. People gouging out their own eyes? Oh, baby, this film has it all!”
Pandorum (2009)
From our review: “For one thing, they seem to be alone, despite this craft hauling 60,000 people. For another, the ship is malfunctioning in a bad way. And we should probably mention that the flight crew both have partial amnesia and there are mutant cannibals roaming about and all of the survivors are a little cooked in the noggin.”

Alien (1979)
From our review: “This nice piece of suspense, science fiction, and horror stands up admirably. I like the raw feel of the spaceship, as if it’s always two minutes from completely falling apart. And any ship that comes equipped with strobe lights during an emergency is always welcome.”
Life (2017)
From our review: “The tiny organism, nicknamed ‘Calvin’ by some schoolkids on Earth, proves to have a mind of its own — a mind of a serial killer. It’s out to grow, devour, crush, kill, destroy, and possibly run a themed bed-and-breakfast in Vermont.”

Galaxy of Terror (1981)
From our review: “What took this project to the next level was the aid of a rising star in the business — a production designer named James Cameron. Cameron quickly worked his way up in the ranks by applying his level of creative genius, eventually assuming some secondary directing duties.”
Lily C.A.T. (1987)
From our review: “As the baker’s dozen awake toward the end of their journey, they gradually find out that the ship is now a giant lethal test tube — and that two of their numbers aren’t who they say they are. With the organism subsuming its victims, it’s a race to grab some flamethrowers and torch anything even slightly suspicious before the entire crew gets assimilated.”
