Six Cannon Group ’80s B-movies that bring the cheesy fun

Looking for some mid-budget action, semi-OK scifi, or off-brand comedy? Then head yourself over to the Cannon Group, which was responsible for more ’80s B-movies than you will believe. Here’s an assortment that are loads of fun despite not being blockbusters:

Bloodsport (1988)

From our review: “The acting is terrible, the entire execution is completely cheeseball, it’s more than a little offensive to well everybody ever. And yet it made over ten times its budget back, launched the career of Jean-Claude Van Damme, and is so very ’80s.”

Masters of the Universe (1987)

From our review: “As undoubtedly cheesy as this film comes off (and it’s mighty cheesy), this is for all intents and purposes a pretty entertaining romp. Lundgren’s oiled performance as He-Man is actually pretty good, and Frank Langella is having all kinds of fun practically gnawing the scenery as Skeletor.”

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987)

From our review: “Easily swayed by any and all tykes who come to him with simplistic requests for complicated problems, Superman charges into the U.N., tells the world that he’s pretty much their judge and jury now, and throws all nuclear warheads into the sun. He’s preachy.”

Lifeforce (1985)

From our review: “Garbage? Cheese? Genius? Only director Tobe Hooper knows, and he doesn’t spell it out very clearly, instead preferring to mash together gobs of genres until we get a spectacle that will leave you wide-eyed and whimpering very softly.”

Cobra (1986)

From our review: “And while I really expected some sort of brain-dead action-flick, I discovered that Cobra held my attention from start to finish. Stallone is just the right amount of cocky, capable, and likable, perhaps not quite as mouthy as John McClane but easily as much of an unexpected handful for a small army of bad guys.”

American Ninja (1985)

From our review: “If you were to intentionally create the most stereotypically ’80s action movie today, there’s no way you could top what’s already been done in American Ninja.”
