Cult Hero of the Week: Bruce Campbell

Mr. Campbell needs no introduction — he’s a B-movie star that’s broken past the shackles of B-movies to become a geek favorite.  An early pairing with director Sam Raimi (and brother Ted Raimi) helped propel him to stardom through the Evil Dead trilogy, where they created Bruce’s best-known shtick: being a lovable jerk who exudes a hybrid of manly stupidity.  Bruce has had bit parts in bigger Hollywood films (including the first three Spider-Man flicks) and has starred in plenty of more culty movies, such as Alien Apocalypse, Bubba Ho-Tep and My Name Is Bruce.

Like many of our heroes, Bruce “The Chin” Campbell didn’t just confine himself to cinema.  He wrote a few books, including the autobiography “If Chins Could Kill” and the farcical novel “Make Love The Bruce Campbell Way”.    You might know him well from his many television roles — the star of The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. and Jack of All Trades, as well as being a supporting character on Hercules, Xena and Burn Notice.

It’s hard to explain to those who don’t “get” Bruce, but he’s really been the flagship actor of cult cinema for a few decades now, to the point where, yes, we get excited that he provided a few “clucks” for Chicken Bittle in Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters, point out that he appeared for a split second as an actor on a TV soap opera during the movie Fargo, and anyone who’s anyone knows that Mr. Campbell is the only reason you stay through the first ten minutes of Congo.  We love because he’s a genuinely down-to-earth nice guy who may not be the best of the best, but he’s a true entertainer to the end.

  1. Congo? The Bruce was in Congo? Okay that, on top of Tim Curry’s weird Romanian character (who wasn’t even in the book) and Joe Don “my my Mitchell” Baker….I have to see this movie.

  2. While I dig the whole movie, the end of Darkman with its brief Bruce-iness is always a highlight.

Oh, and now I have the Guan-Di song stuck in my head. Again.
