Lookwell (1991) — Adam West rides again

“Perhaps if you watched a little bit more television you’d be better at your job.”

Justin’s rating: “There’s a man here who thinks he can help you.” “Batman?” “No, he’s a scientist.” “Batman’s a scientist.” “It’s not Batman!”

Justin’s review: Every day I wake up and thank heaven that Conan O’Brien never started a cult, because I would be powerless to resist joining. The guy is one of the comedy powerhouses of our time, including his epic three-season run as a writer and producer for The Simpsons (that would be Seasons 3 through 5). It stands to reason that any creative would leave a trail of failed projects along the way, however, and 1991’s Lookwell was one of these.

Developed by Conan O’Brien and Robert Smigel, Lookwell was one heck of an odd cop spoof that sought to revitalize Adam West’s career (weirdly enough, Family Guy would be the one to do that before his death). The concept for this half-hour show was took the corniness of West and shoved him into a character that lampooned his actual life. West played a washed-up actor from a police procedural who figured that, hey, since I did fought crime on TV, I can do it in real life too!

As you might deduce, Ty Lookwell (West) undocked from reality a while ago and sails down the stream of life as captain of his own delusional vessel. He’s an even more unhinged version of Fletch, with a variety of silly disguises that help him blend not one little bit — but he thinks they do, so that’s all that matters.

Any time he stumbles by a crime, Lookwell shoves himself into the investigation, relying on his fading fame, long-winded speeches, and his 1972 honorary crimestoppers badge to keep him relevant. At night, naturally he watches tapes of his old show and runs a surprisingly popular acting workshops.

The police barely tolerate him, but Lookwell has complete main character syndrome and lacks any shame to be slowed down. While he looks into a string of car thefts, his acting class serves as his adoring entourage, egging him on and mentioning certain trigger words that sends Adam West down one of his classic Batman moon logic trails. And sometimes he likes to work out theories in front of a Ben Franklin statue, as one does.

The absolute best is when Lookwell disguises himself up as a homeless man to infiltrate a charity benefit. But the joke is that all of his outfits are wildly out of date, so he looks like he’s a bum from some ’40s kids show who’s cheerfully talking about digging through garbage to anyone who will listen.

Lookwell obviously didn’t do that great, landing 92nd out of 92 spots in its one and only broadcast. Yet thanks to the pedigree of the creators and lead actor, it’s become a fun little cult hit for the internet generation to enjoy.

Watching this obsolete, obtuse, oblivious loon wield his insanity and minions with impunity either will have you shaking your head with disbelief or laughing your head off. Either way, your head will be busy in this half-hour.
