Today we’ll be whipping out red flags and blowing our whistles (of approval) at a half-dozen sports flicks. And for fun, this list will include one movie per sports franchise:
Football: Necessary Roughness (1991)
From our review: “But they’ve got the odds stacked against them. So much so, in fact, that their limited numbers mean that all players have to go offense and defense, which is something every other sport looks at football and goes, ‘Aww, you’ve got it so tough there pal.'”
Baseball: Major League (1989)
From our review: “Major League uses baseball as a train, chugging us off to vistas of victory, to landscapes of laughs, to countries of comedy. All the best and funniest scenes are the little bits, and they’re jam packed in here. With actual jam.”

Hockey: Slap Shot (1977)
From our review: “You can always tell when a movie was made in the ’70s, can’t you? The picture is all grainy, there’s little to no actual plot, all the bars have pinball machines and those little tiny beer glasses, and nobody seems bothered by the hairstyles exploding around them.”
Soccer: Shaolin Soccer (2001)
From our review: “The fun of the movie is watching the amazing soccer games. Once the brothers rediscover their forgotten mastery (each has a specialty, like Iron Head or Empty Hand), things become just a riot to watch. The matches see soccer balls kicked into the stratosphere, turned into balls of flame that plow through goalkeepers, nets, and unfortunate photographers.”

BMX Racing: Rad (1986)
From our review: “There’s so little in Rad that doesn’t aim to entertain you. It’s got an upbeat attitude that vibes from start to finish. It features kids playing hide-and-seek with motorcycle cops. It has something called ‘ass-sliding’ that’s just as weird as it sounds. It’s sincere without a trace of irony or meanness.”
Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004)
From our review: “As it is, many of the excellent secondary roles — including Steve the Pirate! — are lessened by being attached to Vaughn’s La Fleur. And it’s HARD to mess up a movie where a guy who pretends to be a pirate plays dodgeball, darnit!”
