Looking back, the 2010s were a goldmine of amazing scifi flicks — particularly from the independent sector. Here are six of our picks for some great futuristic and far-out tales:
Dredd (2012)
From our review: ” He doesn’t need to emote, as he’s a nearly emotionless beast who dispenses judgment without mercy to the scum who populate a massive city that rests in the remains of earth’s landscape. It’s an ugly situation with an ugly civilization that demands an equally ugly response by law and order.”
Source Code (2011)
From our review: “Source Code isn’t a huge, big-budget blockbuster, but a smaller, more thoughtful romp through interesting questions and precarious situations. I expected as much from Moon’s Doug Jones, who returns to direct another scifi thriller that isn’t, on the surface, what you’d expect.”
Predestination (2014)
From our review: “Be patient with this movie. The first part is a whole lot of setup for the events to follow, and while that setup is interesting in its own right, you may forget entirely you’re watching a time travel flick.”

Mad Max Fury Road (2015)
From our review: “Miller decided that he’d make what is essentially a two-hour rolling battle with as many practical effects and stunts as possible. The result is a movie that continually one-ups itself with ludicrous sights that you’ve never witnessed before. It is glorious.”
Upgrade (2018)
From our review: “Grey isn’t the only cyborg on the playing field, either. Several of the bad guys have their own various modifications, from in-built guns to X-ray vision to scythe-wielding nanomachines. The tech of this movie is truly cool… if terrifying.”
Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
From our review: “With so many neat concepts coming at the audience — including a day when the aliens take over London, which was terrifying — and a lot of natural charm and humor coming out of its characters, it’s hard to get bored with Edge of Tomorrow.”
