1999’s Second Annual Mutant Awards

Welcome to the 2nd Annual Mutant Awards, where visitors to the Mutant Reviewers in 1999 picked their favorite oddball flicks and slung them toward stardom. The coveted “Mutie” spotlights films that are surely the cream of the cultish crop. Here we present the winners and runner-ups:

Best Cult Film

Monty Python and the Holy Grail swept the Best Cult Movie category for the second year in a row, although its 22% of the votes just narrowly edged out Clerks (20%). Holy Grail continues to be a college favorite and one of the most quoted movies of all time. Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness, and The Princess Bride all tied for third.

Best Musical Number in a Cult Film

Adam Sandler’s lovelorn wailings in The Wedding Singer (18%) had little in the way of dance moves, but won over our audience anyway. “Somebody Kill Me Please” is a short song and can be found on the first Wedding Singer soundtrack album. Runner-ups included “Time Warp” from Rocky Horror Picture Show and “Stomp” from PCU.

Most Famous Line from a Cult Film

“Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” From the romance/comedy The Princess Bride, this war slogan shot to the top of this category with 22% of the votes. Although The Princess Bride did not win any other categories this year, it was definitely a crowd favorite. Runner-ups in this category were “Ray, if somebody asks you if you’re a god, you say YES!” from Ghostbusters and “I’m not even supposed to be here today!” from Clerks.

Best Supporting Supporting Role

Now dealing with a rash of decapitated hands in movies, our favorite anti-hero Ash started them all when he cut off his own possessed hand with a chainsaw in Evil Dead 2. Ash’s hand (22%) took a life of its own, directly causing the death of one cabin dweller and participating in the demise of another. This was followed by Mr. Bigglesworth in Austin Powers and a third-place tie between Miracle Max from The Princess Bride, the dog in There’s Something About Mary, and Holy Grail’s Tim.

Best Cult Series

Bringing to life the unsung heroes of New Jersey and its fascinating underground, Kevin Smith’s Jersey Trilogy (50%) overpowered all the competition as rabid fans quoted “Adventure. Excitement. A Jedi craves not these things.” Close behind this was the Evil Dead trilogy and the Scream series.

Most Defining ’80s Cult Film

Trying to sum up the Decade of Me came ten comedies that represented that crazy, whatever goes generation. Although all the films were dearly loved, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off won 36% of the votes with can’t-lose kid Matthew Brodrick tearing up Chicago with his best bud and gorgeous girlfriend. Runners-up include The Breakfast Club and Better Off Dead.

Best Canadian Comedy

From the country that gives us… um… cold air fronts and mayonnaise, comes some exceptional comedies that brought out the voters. Kids In The Hall: Brain Candy beat up its competition with 38% of the votes. These Canadian sketch artists will make you appreciate those nutty northerners all the more, eh? Second place went to Canadian Bacon, while third went to Strange Brew.
