Six great comedy horrors that mix scares and giggles

Horror-comedies are a delicious cinematic pairing that meld screams and laughter together in a way that makes you less afraid overall… but maybe a little afraid. Here are six of our favorites:

Tremors (1990)

From our review: “While Tremors might not be as gory or legitimately scary as some horror fans might like, I find its approach a whole lot more enjoyable. There’s great cast chemistry all around, especially between Val and Earl, and I can’t think of many other scary movies where the people are so likable that you don’t want any of them to die.”

Jennifer’s Body (2009)

From our review: “I suppose Juno backlash aside, the genre of horror comedy is a prickly one for most moviegoers; Jennifer’s Body can and should succeed quite nicely on the home-viewing circuit.”

Slither (2006)

From our review: “And believe me when I say Slither goes to lengths to become a cult film for the ages. It references, both directly and indirectly, Troma films (The Toxic Avenger is one mother’s apparent choice of appropriate viewing for her toddler), Night of the CreepsFrom Beyond, and a whole grip of slimy space alien films throughout history.”

Cabin in the Woods (2011)

From our review: “Reportedly written as a protest/satire of the rash of torture porn movies that have come to dominate the genre over the past decade, The Cabin in the Woods accomplishes the near-impossible: It is funny, it is clever, it is self-referential, it is scary, and it is all of these things in equal measure.”

What We Do in the Shadows (2014)

From our review: “To the surprise of no one who saw Waititi’s wonderful Thor: Ragnorak, he and Clement have crafted an extremely funny film. These days, it’s not a novel approach to focus on the humanity of vampires, showing they can be just as petty, vain, and foolish in death as they were in life.”

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010)

From our review: “What follows is an inspired role reversal as the hillbillies are terrorized by the teens — teens who accidentally begin to off themselves one by one.  Comic misunderstandings and gleefully gruesome deaths are par for the course, and it couldn’t have happened to two nicer guys.”

    • I know! I too was disappointed. Not one thing with Bruce in it.

So, to this list I add:

      • Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn
      • Bubba Ho-Tep
      • Dead + Breakfast
      • Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon
      • How To Be A Serial Killer
      • Black Sheep
      • How To Kill A Zombie (mostly because I was an extra)
      • Fido
      • I hadn’t heard of Dead & Breakfast before. I googled it – sounds interesting.

I have a copy of “Bubba Ho Tep” I really must watch.
