The writing/producing/directing duo of Fred Dekker and Shane Black have gifted us with several wild cult classics over the years. Here are six movies from one or both of these cowboy creatives:
Night of the Creeps (1986)
From our review: “This movie has it all: college-age silliness, some really great special effects for the time, long ’80s synth pads that try to build tension, and alien brain slugs that turn people and animals into zombies.”
The Monster Squad (1987)
From our review: “What’s important is that as a kid, this was one of the very few movies I found scary enough to be worth watching for genuine thrills, but funny enough that I wasn’t diving behind pillows like Lissa at a shark movie.”
RoboCop 3 (1993)
From our review: “Brief moments are all the fanservice we get, such as robotic assassins who can make goofy faces, a jetpack and weapon arm for Robo, and… um… look! A cute precocious computer genius kid! Ain’t she adorable?”

The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)
From our review: “What makes them work (in my deluded mind) is that the film takes all this traditional serious stuntwork and presents it with a twinkle in the eye and a devilish smile. I particularly got a kick out of Charlie treating her suburban neighborhood like a war obstacle course, culminating in a skate/shoot-fest across the park pond.”
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)
From our review: “There’s a subtle aftertaste of a good film here. Harry and Perry have a quirky dynamic between them, and film noir done smartly and with some humor is often worth a watch.”
The Predator (2018)
From our review: “Let’s also give Black some credit for wanting to do right by the franchise: He resisted studio pressure to turn this into a reboot or something less than a hard R. I’m not bloodthirsty by any means, but I feel strongly that movie franchises need to not compromise what made them special in the first place.”
