“Oh, great! If anyone attacks we can blink em’ to death!”

Andie’s rating: All the fun stuff always requires batteries…. sigh.

Andie’s review: Well, being the self-proclaimed children’s movie reviewer, I decided I should probably watch Toy Story and Toy Story 2. I hadn’t seen either one yet and everyone kept saying how great they are and blahblahblah so I finally watched the first one. And I have to say that I loved it! I haven’t laughed this hard in awhile. I mean, it may look like a kids movie, but a lot of the jokes are geared towards adults. This is truly an adventure for all ages.

Basically, a little boy named Andy (coolest name ever) gets a new supercool toy named Buzz Lightyear for his birthday and his old favorite toy, Woody the cowboy, feels all left out. So Woody accidentally on purpose disposes of Buzz, only to feel really bad and try to get him back and Woody and Buzz go on a crazy adventure to get back to Andy’s room before he moves away and they’re left behind.

What’s really great, though, are all the supporting toys in this movie. There’s Mr. Potato Head and a dinosaur named Rex who has George “I don’t think I can take that kind of rejection” McFly complex and a piggy bank named Hamm and Little Bo Peep and bunches of others and they’re all terrific.

There’s also this creepy kid next door (I’m sure we all knew one as a kid) who likes to blow his toys up and play surgeon, so that crawling around his bedroom are a bunch of creepy mutant toys, reminiscent of the classic horror movie Freaks. When all these scary Frankenstein-d toys come out for the first time, it was actually pretty freaky, I did not like it at all. But they end up being okay guys and helping Woody and Buzz and everybody’s happy. Tra la la.

Go see the movie. I’m off to see the sequel, which I’ve heard is just as good, if not better.

• The carpet texture in the hallway of Sid’s house is the same as the carpet texture in The Shining.
• In the scene where Buzz is knocked out of the window, the theme to Raiders of the Lost Ark can be heard in a minor key.
• Rex uses a few of George McFly’s lines from Back to the Future: “I don’t like confrontations” and “I don’t think I could take that kind of rejection.”
• We never fully see a grown man in this movie. When adult men are pictured they are always obscured in some way. In the accident, all the people involved are women.
