A New Year of Culty Madness

Greetings and Salutations to our loyal mutated readers!

With 2010 tucked neatly out of the way, Mutant Reviewers From Hell enters its 15th (!) year of cult movie and TV reviews.  Every once in a while my wife asks me why I’m still doing MRFH — is it a sense of nostalgia for college?  An onerous duty?  Nay, I tell her, it’s because it’s still fun.

I’d be lying if I said I watch as many movies as I used to — with two kids and two jobs, it’s not as high a priority.  But my Netflix queue is still brimming over with the most bizarre flicks I can scrounge up, and I watch at least a few of them every week.  Like anything else in life, you simply adapt and decide what’s worth holding on to.  Mutant Reviewers is always worth it to me.

We have an exciting year ahead of us for Mutant Reviewers, and I want to get a few announcements out of the way at the start.  First of all, both Lissa and Kyle, long-time writers for the site, have let us know that real-life responsibilities were making their involvement impossible, and as such, they are stepping down into retirement.  Don’t fret, however — we’ll still be posting retro reviews of their awesome insights, and they’re always welcome to come back for a post when and if the mood hits them.

Switching from sad to happy, I am pretty psyched to announce that both Heather and Drew have agreed to become officers for MRFH.  They’ve both put in a TON of behind-the-scenes work the past few years, and their enthusiasm for the site has come out in many ways.  They’ve proven themselves as leaders, so now they have the title to go with it.

We’re also going to be putting out a call this week for new writers.  Although MRFH is an unpaid gig, we’ve prided ourselves on drawing some of the best writers on the net into our fold, and we hope that this continues.  If you have a passion for cult movies and are a good writer with a unique perspective, I hope we’ll be seeing your application soon!

That’s about it for today — although I want to ask that if you have any suggestions or ideas for the future of MRFH that you put them in the comments section here!

Tally-ho,

Justin

  1. I know I’ve said it elsewhere, but Lissa and Kyle, we’re gonna miss you guys. Lissa, I’ll expect your guest review of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows later this year!

  2. I’m right there with you, Drew. I got to say it to Lissa, but I haven’t told Kyle yet that you (both) really have a special and unique voice here and that is going to be sorely missed. I’ve always loved that this site has so many different reviewers with such different tastes, because one really feels like every kind of movie is going to get covered here. I’ll miss Kooky Indie Kyle and Loving Musical Lissa. Okay that sounded really dorky so I’m going to stop now.

  3. Awww. Thanks, guys. Stepping down is definitely hard to do, but… Emeritus status definitely makes it easier. ::sniffs::

Does this mean, Pooly, Kyle, and I can now be the Statler, Waldorf, and another-random-hotel-name of MRFH now? 🙂
