Saturday’s Six: Why it would be awesome to work in the office from The Office

While the employees of Dunder Mifflin/Sable may bemoan the fact that their workplace sucks the life out of them, the truth is that we should all be so lucky as to get a job at a place.  Here are six reasons why it would be awesome to work in the office from The Office.

1. Amusement value

C’mon — at some point you’ve wished that your workplace would be just like the setting of a sitcom, with colorful characters who were always doing something wacky and making you laugh.  I can’t think of a typical office that packs so much hilarity as Dunder Mifflin, whether it be Jim’s pranks, Meredith’s drunken binges or Creed’s four-toed foot.  Oh, and Michael, but that’s just common sense.

2. Eye candy

One of the things I love about The Office is that they put real-looking people — not perfect supermodels — into these roles.  That said, if you’re the type who wouldn’t mind a little flirtation now and then, there’s a few lookers in this workspace.

Pam… don’t walk away.  Please…

3. Always something happening

Now, I don’t work in a corporate environment, but my wife does, and I can say that the most exciting thing that happens at her job is either (a) when people get in a paper clip war, or (b) when they serve free lunch during a seminar.  Contrast that to Dunder Mifflin, where there is something interesting going on almost all the time, whether it be Michael’s bizarre meetings, Ryan setting the building on fire, Dwight trying to consolidate power or a charity fun run to combat rabies.

4. Cool parties

Okay, do you know any offices that throw as many parties as Scranton’s Dunder Mifflin?  To the point where they have a dedicated Party Planning Committee?  I thought not.  Birthdays, Halloween, 5/5/05, welcome back parties, launch parties, Christmas blowouts, you name it — this is one office that likes to boogie down on a regular basis.

5. Low stress

When your boss is a certified slacker and your job is to sell paper, it’s not exactly the most stressful job in the world.  To their credit, the employees do work hard, but they hardly ever seem under a lot of pressure to succeed.  I could use low stress sometimes.  Or a lot of times.

6. Great stories to tell your kids

“What did you do at work today, dad?”

“Oh, we went to a beach and sumo wrestled.  That wasn’t as fun as last week, when we had the Office Olympics, or the week before when our idiot boss took a forklift and trashed the warehouse.”

“COOL!”

Enough said.
